Resources Available to Survivors of Homicide

Families and friends of homicide victims experience a sudden traumatic, life changing loss. Homicide is not a normal, lifespan death or illness. It is a crime. Your loved one has been suddenly taken from you and now you must try to reorganize your life and go on.

Coping with a violent death is always difficult. Iowa Homicide & Other Violent Crimes programs were developed with the mission to ensure survivors’ and victims’ rights, safety and healing were given top priority following the crime. If you are a family member or friend of one whose life was lost through homicide, you can call us at the Call Center at any time. Call Center Advocates are available 24/7, 365 days a year to listen to you, empathize with you and to assist you.

What can you expect if you reach out to a Call Center Advocate? You can expect a compassionate advocate that is ready to listen and navigate through resources to help you along your journey. Call Center Advocates, if the survivor would like, will connect them to their local Crime Victim Service Specialist. The Crime Victim Service Specialist will work closely with survivors through the following: emergency crisis support, court accompaniment, liaison with Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, transportation, assist with filing Crime Victim Compensation forms, and post-conviction support.

If you would like to learn more about the resources available to you in your area or if you would just like a compassionate advocate to talk to, call us at 1.800.770.1650. We are here for you.
